Are you looking for your next getaway destination in Kentucky? Look no further than Mammoth Cave National Park. Located just off I-65 an hour and a half south of Louisville, this attraction is something you don’t want to miss.
About Mammoth Cave
It’s called “mammoth” for a reason. This cave system is one of the longest in the world—all located beneath hilly south-central Kentucky and the Green River valley. Since the 18th century when European settlers discovered the cave, it has become a destination of wonder and discovery for visitors year after year. With more than 400 miles of caves explored, there’s certainly no end to what you might find in Mammoth’s depths.
Depending on how much time you have and your caving experience, you can choose from a number of cave tours and expeditions. Note that these tours change seasonally, so you will want to check the Mammoth Cave National Park website for the most recent information. However, know that each one will leave you in awe of nature and what beauty and mystery lie beneath bluegrass country.
Most people come for the caves, and rightly so. However, if you plan on spending a few days at the park, we recommend that you also take advantage of some of their other activities, including:
- Canoeing and kayaking
- And more
Mammoth Cave has its own campgrounds, in case you want to stay directly in the park. The sites are RV compatible, but they don’t have direct hookup. However, they’re great for pop-up camper rentals. You’ll be plenty comfortable with the other amenities available on site, including:
- Restrooms (with toilets & showers)
- Picnic tables
- Coin laundry
- Camp store
- And more
Be sure to make your campsite reservation in advance since Mammoth Cave is a popular destination for many vacationers.
