The music of Lord of the Dance is familiar to many, but did you know that the tune was originally a Shaker hymn? Less widely known than the Quakers, the Shakers were a religious group in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Shakers lived in communal villages and devoted their lives to hard work and prayer, and although the group itself has mostly vanished, its many inventions are still used today. Next time you’re around Louisville, why not visit Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill?

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill was built in 1805. At its height, there were 500 members, living and working on 4,000 acres of Kentucky farmland. Today, the community is no longer religious. However, the living history museum that now occupies the 14 original buildings not only showcases the Shaker life but also demonstrates trade techniques used during the early 1800’s, including furniture making, broom making, spinning, weaving, and gardening.

When you visit Shaker Village in your RV rental, expect to be impressed by its simplicity and tranquility. Author Thomas Merton, who visited Shaker Village before it was restored, wrote of “…the marvelous double winding stair going up to the mysterious clarity of a dome on the roof…” and finished by saying that “In spite of the general decay…there is joy there still and simplicity.” These aspects are still evident after Shaker Village’s restoration, and you’ll enjoy this quiet getaway as you watch living history re-enactors make brooms, buckets, and woven cloth as they tell you about life in the early 1800s. You can also eat traditional Shaker food (made entirely from seasonal ingredients grown in Shaker Village’s gardens) at the Trustees’ Office Dining Room.

If you’re looking for a peaceful afternoon on your camper rental adventure, Shaker Village is the place for you. During the summer, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children; during the winter, it closes at 4:00 p.m. and admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children.
