A vacation near world-class mountain biking trails may be closer than you think. In fact, if you live in Indianapolis, it’s practically in your backyard.
Often called the “Little Smokies” because of this woodland’s scenic views, Brown County State Park is just one hour away from Indy. This rustic area is home to some of the best mountain biking trails in the Midwest.
If you’re a hardcore biker and have never heard of these trails before, it’s because they’ve only been around for a couple of years. However, these 25 miles of trails have achieved a large amount of fame in a short amount of time.
In 2011 the IMBA (International Mountain Biker’s Association) gave these trails the coveted “Epic” rating for their wide range of difficulty levels, breathtaking scenery, and well-designed trails.
Additionally, the magazine Bike gave a raving review of the trails in its March 2009 issue, rating them as one of the best 33 rides in North America.
The Trail Rundown
You may be wondering how a mountain biking trail in Indiana has achieved such fame. The answer is mind-blowing trails. This circuit offers five different loops with three paths that connect them. You’ll find everything from mostly downhill beginner rides (the Limekiln and Pine Loop trails) to insanely twisted, double black-diamond runs that will infuse you with equal amounts of terror and delight (Schooner Trail). View the map for a more detailed guide.
From jumping roots to navigating switchbacks, you’ll love riding at Brown County State Park. The park opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 11 p.m. year-round, which means you can even do some night riding. It takes an experienced rider approximately five hours to ride all the trails.
Bike and Camp
The fun doesn’t have to end once you finish the trail. Instead, spend a couple days camping in this breathtaking area. Greenwood RV Rentals & Sales offers a large selection of RV rentals, travel trailers, and camper rentals that are the perfect way to immerse yourself in the local wilderness. The state park has several amazing campgrounds, and the Buffalo Ridge Campground even has full hookups.
