Because of the great camping lots, number of family activities and fun education opportunities, we have voted that our favorite Indiana vacation destination is the Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore.
Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore
Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore lies along 15 miles of Lake Michigan and has a variety of outdoor and educational opportunities. Whether you enjoy scouting for rare species of birds or flying kites on the sandy beach, the national lakeshore’s 15,000 acres will continually enchant you. Hikers will enjoy 45 miles of trails over rugged dunes, mysterious wetlands, sunny prairies, meandering rivers, and peaceful forests.
While visiting the Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore you can engage in a variety of outdoor adventures. The majority of our visitors stay for several days, even weeks. Some of the awesome nature activities the park has to offer are the following:
- See the Heron Rookery wildflowers
- Walk along the beach.
- Stroll along the Little Calumet River.
- Walk through the tall grasses of Mnoké Prairie
- Hike up Mount Baldy on marked trails.
- Picnic along the Lake Michigan shoreline
- Discover the wonders of Pinhook Bog with a ranger.
- Learn about the Chellberg Family, an early 20th century immigrant family.
- Explore the moraines left behind by the Wisconsin glacier.
This campsite does allow pets, so your furry family members can join you on the trip! The campsites are spacious and clean, making them the perfect spot to park any-sized RV rental. The camping season lasts from April 2012 to the third Sunday in October. Indiana Dunes State Park sells firewood so be sure to pack the marshmallows and hotdogs!
